1954 VARSITY GRILL GRAND RAPIDS
The Varsity Grill a popular restaurant in the 1950's - 1960's and now owned by the Inner City Christian Federation was the first building Knapp designed in Grand Rapids.
1954 KENT HILLS PARK-SCHOOL
1954 Kent Hills Elementary was one of the first schools designed in the first phase of the Grand Rapids Park-Schools project, 1951-1954.
1955 HOLLIS BAKER JR. SUMMER HOUSE
Located on Lake Macatawa, the Baker Summer House featured featured an authentic Japanese design and was featured in House and Garden Magazine.
1957 BLINN HOUSE GREENVILLE
Modern house in Greenville built for Marjorie Salzman Blinn, a friend from Belding and colleague at Smith, Hinchman & Grylls in 1946.
1958 FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH GRAND RAPIDS
1957 O'RYAN HOUSE ON MONA LAKE
The O'Ryan house designed for a landscape architect was Knapp's first folded plate roof design and is located on Mona Lake in Norton Shores.
1957 SECOND METHODIST CHURCH
The old Second Methodist Church was located on a site taken for the new I-196 Freeway through downtown. In the church on 7th Street in Grand Rapids northwest side, Knapp created the look of stained glass in the multi-gabled central sanctuary.
1957 HAVEN BUSCH EXECUTIVE OFFICES
This appears to be an architect's model of the of the modern office building constructed on the site of the Haven Busch Steel Fabrication company off Chicago Drive. Site has changed hands and the building is substantially altered.
1958 LOVELL-LARAMY HOUSE
The Lovell-Laramy House was designed for two Grand Rapids Public School educators in a northeast side neighborhood overlooking the site of the former Greenridge Country Club.
1959 KNAPP FAMILY RESIDENCE
The Knapp Family Residence was very modern at the time designed using the module style with a glass and panel exterior and located on a steep nearly unbuildable site in East Grand Rapids.
1959 The William Dunlap House
The William Dunlap House was was a collaborative project between architect E. John Knapp for the building and the George Nelson Office for the interior. Featured in Progressive Architecture Magazine.
1960 LAFAYETTE MEDICAL BUILDING GRAND RAPIDS
Lafayette Medical Building was completed in 1961 as a low-profile two-story medical office building with a garden terrace and Italian tile trim. Now vacant and in disrepair.
1960 DEWEY HOUSE IN THE VILLAGE
The Dewey House was originally the Ehinger House, the first house built in The Village, an Albert Builders/Rockford Village Builders development built on former farmland east of Downtown Rockford.
1962 NORTH PARK CHURCH
The North Park Presbyterian Church with it's multi-peak roof surrounding a slender spire overlooks the I-196 Freeway just NE of downtown.
1964 KENDELWOOD MODEL FOR ALBERT BUILDERS
This large 5-bedroom Kendelwood model in East Grand Rapids has a spectacular window wall and was beautifully restored by interior designer Mindi Freng. It is one of over 300 developer homes designed by O'Bryon & Knapp for Albert Builders.
1966 OOSTING HOUSE
The Oosting House in Ada is really three structures linked together to maximize the elevations of the beautiful natural site. Knapp moved to Wisconsin and never saw the completed home in person.
1963 MICHIGAN CONSOLIDATED GAS BUILDING (DTE) GRAND RAPIDS
The Michigan Consolidated Gas Building was a classic modern office building and is still in use by DTE on Wealthy just west of U.S. 31.
1964 TRANSAMERICA TITLE COMPANY

1964 THE DAVID AMBERG HOUSE EAST GRAND RAPIDS

1957 RONDA TIRE BUILDING, GRAND RAPIDS
Located at 130 Market SW, just southwest of downtown, this iconic building had not changed much. It was designed so that Ronda Tires could grow their tire-retreading business. Photo courtesty of the Grand Rapids Public Library Local History and Special Collections Department.
1959 KENT COUNTY JAIL AND SHERIFF'S HOUSE
O'Bryon & Knapp were Associate Architects for Yamasaki Associates on the new Kent County Jail. Knapp designed a new modern house for the Sheriff shown in the foreground across from the jail.
1953 FERNDLE PUBLC LIBRARY
Located at 130 Nine Mile Road, the library was designed by Bery & Knapp and completed in 1953. Link here for more including photo credits.
